Questions covered in this guide

Ask what winter condition is being designed for

Request the outdoor design condition and the home’s calculated heating requirement from the contractor. Have those values recorded with the proposal. The question is how the selected system serves the home under the agreed conditions, not whether a product can operate at a temperature printed in a headline.

Request the relevant performance data

DOE describes heat-pump performance changes in cold weather. Its cold-climate program targets improved low-temperature capacity and efficiency. Ask for the manufacturer’s capacity and efficiency information for the exact indoor/outdoor combination at the conditions used in the design. Have the installer distinguish available heating output from a minimum operating-temperature statement. Keep any cold-climate certification or listing with the model identifiers so it can be checked against the actual order.

Compare the complete winter plan

Use rows for calculated demand, equipment output at relevant temperatures, supplemental heat, controls and electrical or fuel work. Ask how the contractor handles any gap between demand and available capacity, and how the system changes operating modes. Request an explanation of assumptions about recent insulation or window improvements. If two bidders use different design conditions or performance tables, reconcile those differences before deciding one proposal supplies more useful heating. Keep the commissioning and owner-control explanation in the scope.

Budget the specified system

Compare installed totals that include the full winter operating plan and any necessary supporting work. Use a supplied price for a specialized configuration; the calculator’s broad heat-pump reference is not a cold-climate design or quote. Leave projected operating savings blank unless they come from a documented analysis of the proposed system, local energy prices and the home’s assumptions.
