Name both heat sources in the quote

Record the heat-pump and furnace model numbers, whether each is new or retained, and the controller proposed to manage them. Ask the contractor to explain the intended sequence in ordinary language. Two listed pieces of equipment do not yet describe how the completed system will choose between them.

Ask for a documented control approach

Trane describes dual fuel as a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. Its glossary relates operation to conditions and system needs. Have the installer identify the operating conditions and settings used for your selected combination. Ask who determines them and how they will be checked during setup. Do not copy a temperature setting from another home or assume that a control chooses the lowest operating cost without the required inputs and configuration.

Compare the operating assumptions

Create rows for heating demand, available heat-pump output, furnace role, switchover method, energy-price assumptions and override behavior. Ask what happens when a sensor fails or the homeowner changes a setting. Keep this as a commissioning and explanation request, not a wiring or programming procedure. If a proposal claims an economic advantage, request the calculation with current rates and stated assumptions. Compare the same furnace-retention and supporting-work scope when reviewing the installed price.

Keep the owner instructions usable

Request a written explanation of normal operation, the settings intended for owner use and the contact for a performance concern. Save the final configuration with the commissioning record. Use supplied project prices to compare the complete alternatives in the HVAC calculator. It does not model dual-fuel operating costs or select a balance point, and a broad equipment allowance should not conceal unresolved compatibility or control work.
