A new unit still needs an airflow plan

ENERGY STAR includes filter care and blower airflow in its maintenance guidance. Its quality-installation guidance also calls for airflow that meets the equipment manufacturer’s requirements. That makes the filter location and airflow check useful handoff questions, not an automatic reason to buy a larger system.

Describe what you can observe

Before the visit, make a note of where you normally change the filter, which size is printed on its packaging and whether reaching it is difficult. If you do not know, leave those lines blank and ask the contractor to show you. Do not open equipment panels or enter an unsafe attic to complete a worksheet. Record comfort complaints separately from your guess about their cause.

Ask for a maintenance demonstration

Use four rows on your proposal sheet: filter location, specified replacement product, access method and the manufacturer’s inspection or replacement instructions. Ask whether all filters serving the system are shown. Have the installer explain what the homeowner can do and what requires a service visit. A label reading high efficiency does not answer these practical questions.

Compare the work, not an assumed repair

Request the planned airflow check and any separately proposed return-air, filter-cabinet or duct work in writing. If a repair is recommended, ask what observation or measurement supports it. Keep an optional filter-cabinet upgrade separate from the core replacement so you can compare bids with the same scope. The HVAC tool leaves unresolved duct work unpriced; enter a documented project total or your own clearly labeled allowance when you have one. It cannot diagnose low airflow from home size or a filter photograph.

Putting it into practice

The handoff worksheet records access and replacement instructions as deliverables. It keeps a maintenance problem, measured installation requirement and elective filter upgrade separate instead of turning them into an unsupported equipment-size recommendation.
