Questions covered in this guide

Agree on the handoff before work starts

Ask the installer to include the completion documents in the proposal. A useful folder has the installed model and serial numbers, the equipment manuals, warranty documents, permit and inspection records where applicable, and the person to contact if a problem appears. Request the records for the equipment actually installed if a substitution occurred.

Ask for the startup record

ENERGY STAR's installation guidance includes checking refrigerant charge and airflow. Ask the installer what measurements they record for your system and what those results mean. You do not need to perform those tests yourself. The practical goal is to retain a record that can help the installer explain performance now and help a future technician understand the installation.

Walk through ordinary use

Have the installer demonstrate the thermostat, normal operating modes, filter access and the owner's maintenance responsibilities. Record the filter specification and where the applicable instructions are kept. Ask how to recognize a condition that calls for service and how to request help. If more than one company completed the work, identify who owns each remaining question.

Close the loop on unfinished items

Create a short list with an owner and target date for each open item: inspection, missing document, finish repair or follow-up visit. Separate those items from personal preferences such as a control setting you want to try. Save the final scope and startup record with your planning result. This checklist organizes the handoff; it does not certify installation quality or replace the contractor's testing and local inspection requirements.

Putting it into practice

A handoff folder connects the proposed work to the installed system. Recording an owner and due date for each incomplete item makes the final conversation more actionable than a general statement that the job is finished.
