Questions covered in this guide

List the equipment the plan should cover

Write down each heating and cooling system and any separate ventilation or humidity-control equipment. Note whether parts of the home use different technologies. Ask the provider to identify exactly which units are included in its plan. A household with several pieces of equipment should not assume that a per-home headline price covers all of them.

Compare tasks with the relevant guidance

ENERGY STAR recommends annual pre-season contractor checkups. Its checklist separates general, cooling and heating tasks. Ask for the provider’s written visit checklist for your actual equipment. Have the company identify inspections, cleaning and measurements rather than relying on a label such as tune-up. Keep product-specific manufacturer maintenance requirements with the comparison and ask who handles work outside the plan.

Read the practical service terms

Make rows for number of visits, scheduling, included labor, consumables, exclusions, diagnostic charges and the process for approving repairs. Ask what a priority-service claim actually changes and whether availability or response time is guaranteed in the contract. Record renewal, cancellation and transfer terms without assuming they match another company’s plan. If a discount is offered, identify what price it applies to and keep the undiscounted repair scope visible. A plan price alone does not tell you what an unexpected repair will cost.

Choose from complete written offers

Compare the same equipment list and visit tasks before evaluating totals. Keep any optional repairs or accessories separate from the maintenance agreement. Save service records after each visit so future work can be assessed against actual findings. The HVAC replacement calculator does not price maintenance plans or predict breakdown avoidance; use the written annual cost and documented benefits without assigning an unsupported equipment-life extension.
