Questions covered in this guide
Turn the comfort complaint into a room list
Label each room and the supply or return openings you know about. Note when it is uncomfortable and which doors are usually closed. Give the same list to every bidder. Ask whether the proposed assessment includes the delivery of air to those rooms instead of focusing only on the equipment label.
Request a report you can reconcile
PNNL describes reports listing room design airflow. Its guidance also records measured final airflow. Ask the contractor to explain the target and measured values in their report and identify the conditions used for the check. Keep the program or standard referenced by the contractor visible, but do not assume a requirement from a new-home certification program automatically applies to your replacement project.
Use the report to define corrections
Create columns for room, planned airflow, measured airflow, identified cause, proposed correction and recheck result. Ask the contractor to explain meaningful differences and the limitations of the measurement. If a register, duct or return route changes, have the drawing and report updated together. Keep an equipment-size recommendation separate from the evidence about distribution. Ask how the system will be checked in the operating modes and door conditions relevant to the household, rather than accepting a single unlabeled number for the whole home.
Keep verification in the scope
Request a price for the assessment and any identified correction, with the final report included as a deliverable. Save it beside the equipment and duct records. Use actual supplied costs in your project budget; the HVAC calculator does not generate room airflow targets or estimate the price of balancing work. A documented before-and-after check makes the agreed work easier to review without promising identical temperatures in every room.
