Questions covered in this guide
Decide which spaces the proposal should serve
List the rooms with a documented concern and when they are used. Ask whether the problem is isolated or appears across the home. Keep the assessment findings with the request so the equipment choice responds to an identified condition. A whole-home label does not replace a plan for which rooms receive the intended service.
Compare the two installation types
ENERGY STAR distinguishes portable from ducted whole-home dehumidifiers. Its guidance describes different water-removal arrangements. Ask the seller to explain the exact unit, its intended location and how collected water will be handled. Have a qualified installer confirm any drain, pump, electrical or duct connection. Keep the chosen capacity and its selection rationale on the proposal rather than ordering from floor area alone.
Build an operating-task worksheet
Make rows for served area, controls, drainage, filter access, routine cleaning, noise location and service access. For a portable unit, ask how emptying or a permitted drain arrangement fits the household routine. For a ducted unit, request a drawing and explanation of its interaction with the existing HVAC system. Record who provides each connection and how operation will be checked. Compare the actual work included, including any restoration after installation, rather than only the retail equipment prices.
Use complete costs and clear expectations
Request the installed total and the owner-care instructions for each option. Ask what condition will be monitored to determine whether the agreed goal is being met. Keep future consumables or service quoted separately when known. The HVAC calculator does not price dehumidifiers or forecast moisture removal in your home; use a supplied project amount and keep unresolved building-moisture issues outside the equipment budget until assessed.
