Questions covered in this guide

Define the rooms and purpose

State whether the proposal is intended to warm a floor, heat an entire room or replace the home’s primary heating. Mark the rooms, existing floor finishes and planned remodeling work. Ask the designer to explain the intended scope before comparing a small comfort feature with a complete heating-system proposal.

Identify the actual technology

DOE’s renovation guide describes hydronic radiant floor loops. It distinguishes heat-delivery components from the boiler system. The cited guide supplies basic system context; its older price and incentive information is not used here. Ask the contractor to identify whether the proposed system is hydronic, electric or another configuration and provide the current product design information. Keep the heat source, distribution and controls as separate parts of the explanation.

Compare the building-work responsibilities

Use rows for design, floor assembly, heat source, distribution, controls, electrical or plumbing work and finish restoration. Ask the responsible designer to confirm compatibility with the selected floor materials and the room’s heating requirement. Record the installation sequence and who coordinates among the heating contractor and flooring trade. If existing floors must be disturbed, have the scope state the removal and replacement work. Keep any remaining cooling or ventilation need visible rather than assuming a heating proposal provides those functions.

Budget from the designed scope

Request a complete installed total and the commissioning and owner instructions. Compare alternatives only when they serve the same rooms and purpose. The HVAC calculator’s furnace and air-source references do not price radiant floor systems or select their capacity. Use a supplied-price worksheet and avoid predicting operating savings or a response time from a generic system label or the room’s floor area alone.
