Record the difference you notice

Write down the thermostat reading and what occupants report in the affected rooms at similar times. Note sun exposure, open doors, cooking or other nearby activity. Keep the record observational; a difference between two consumer devices does not prove either one is accurate. Give the contractor the pattern rather than requesting a relocation without a diagnosis.

Ask what the thermostat is sensing

Carrier recommends avoiding direct sun at a thermostat. Its guidance also identifies drafts and nearby heat sources. Ask the contractor to evaluate the current location and explain whether it represents the intended controlled space. If a remote sensor is proposed, request its model and the controller’s actual method for using its reading. Averaging, selecting one room or following a schedule are different behaviors that need to be explained for the product.

Compare the control alternatives

Make rows for current location, proposed location, sensor rooms, operating schedule, owner adjustments and installation work. Ask what happens when a sensor is offline and how the household can tell which reading controls the system. Keep equipment compatibility questions separate from the room-comfort diagnosis. Have the contractor explain whether an airflow, envelope or equipment problem also needs attention. Do not assume changing a control resolves a room that cannot receive the required heating or cooling.

Agree on the final demonstration

Request a written control plan and a demonstration of the normal settings after installation. Save the sensor identifiers and service contact with the system record. Compare the complete installed costs, including any wall repair or wiring work. The HVAC calculator does not model thermostat placement or price every connected-control package; use a supplied amount and keep the original concern available for the follow-up check.
